July 6, 2011

Slept in.  Gerry made pancakes.  He used the baking powder from 2007 which he chipped out of the can so they were more like crepes than actual pancakes.  No complaints were heard.

We hung around this morning and relaxed.  The kids needed some down-time and most of us got some exercise.
Bradley:  Billy is hitting me!
CC:  Bradley, how many times did you hit Billy with the pillow?  I saw you do it twice.
Bradley:  Billy, I’m not going to talk to you for 40 days and 40 nights!
Cousin Phyllis came over for lunch today.  It is always a treat to visit with her and catch up on all her fun.

The afternoon was spent at the beach.  We buried the kids, dug holes and fed the seagulls.  The wind is up and consequently, so was the surf.  We didn’t swim much.

CC bought fresh grouper and tuna for dinner – yum!  We celebrated Billy’s birthday tonight since David is heading back to Winston Salem this evening.  His actual birthday is Saturday.

Water Bogan!

That place has improved since mid-1970s.  No longer do you have to watch the light board to see if your mat time is up.  Now you get a standard-issue wrist band with your time marked on it.  Instead of 3 concrete tracks, there are 6 long ones plus an entire little-kids’ area.  The mats also seemed easier to carry.   (I noted the same thing about my snow skis 20 years ago.)

It turns out that Katie is the thrill seeker of the bunch.  She mastered the tube slides early and stayed there most of the day.  Lindsay, Karl, David and I all tried it as well.
Me:  How was it?
Lindsay:  Fun!  It was kind of sicky.
Me:  Want to go again?
Lindsay:  Nah.  I just said it was kind of sicky.
She speaks the truth.

Billy mastered the mat slides.  He nearly drowned at the bottom pool every time – the mat would go over his head – making this experience no different than any other involving water so far.
Gerry:  You OK, buddy?
Billy:  [splutter, cough, gasp]  Yes!  I want to go again!

Karl and Bradley hung out together, making the rounds to all the various venues.  Special thanks to CC for being our photographer today!

We ordered lunch from the Big Oak Drive-In.  I think they chopped down the actual Big Oak to put in a parking lot.  They sure needed it.  Gayle picked up the food and said the line was 40 people deep. I’m glad we called in advance!  The soft shell crab and shrimp burgers did not disappoint.

It was cloudy in the afternoon so I ran errands while CC and Lindsay went off for manicures.  Everyone else hung out at the house.  I made crab cakes for dinner, using Paula Deen’s recipe and the crab we caught the other day.  They were very good.  Gayle, David, Gerry and I topped the day off with a few competitive rounds of Sequence.

Billy:  Is today my birthday?
Me:  No, we have to celebrate America’s birthday and then it will be your birthday.
Billy:  What!?  You said my birthday was next!

We celebrated the 4th of July like any other day on vacation.  Up too early.  Coffee.  Beach.  Lunch.  Aquarium.  Dinner.  Fireworks.

This afternoon, we went back to the Pine Knolls Shore Aquarium for a Behind the Scenes Tour.  Well, most of us did.  Billy was too young so he and I just explored the front of the house on our own.  I heard the tour was great, though.  What I really enjoy about that aquarium is that it is well marked.  If there is a fish placard on the wall next to a display, that fish is in the display.  Also, 3 pm on the 4th of July is the right time to go.  It was so non-aggravating that we went through the store at the end.

Later this evening, we lit sparklers and low-impact fireworks.  Happy Birthday, America!

July 3, 2011

Our vacation this year marks a milestone:  we can actually leave the house for the entire day.  This is due to a number of factors.
  1. We no longer have a napping child and everyone is potty trained, including Gerry.
  2.  Gerry is here this year, so there is an extra hand around with the kids.  I actually talked to other adults today!
  3. We drove our own car and thus have transportation.
  4. Again, many thanks for the DVD player.

Gayle’s family and ours left Emerald Isle around 9 am, in route to Wilmington, NC to visit my dad’s side of the family.  My uncle, Carl Jr., and his wife, Linda, invited us to come over for a visit.  Bonus!  They have a pool, making it the ideal location for the kids.  I talked so much that I forgot to take photos until the very end.

We saw:
  • Carl & Linda Venters (uncle & aunt)
  •  Kristy, Billy & Julia Thompson (cousin & family)
  • Grainger Gilbert (cousin)
  • Chip & Shelley Venters (cousin)
  • Julie & Price Sullivan (cousin)
We also visited my aunt, Bobbie, and her husband, Bud on the way out of town.  Always great to see them.  This time, I talked so much that I forgot to take any photos at all.

On the way back, we drove through Topsail to see my aunt and uncle on my mom’s side of the family.  Mary John (aunt) prepared a feast.  The biggest hit was the Turtle Burgers for the kids.  It was a short hot-dog wrapped in ground beef, then criss-crossed with bacon.  No bun required.  I think they were pan-fried.  No one complained about this meal, that’s for sure.  Billy ate his first deviled egg and loved it.

"Hallelujah!  We are at the beach!"
Interlude  All of us have birthdays fairly close together so at this time of year we often have conversations about whose birthday is after whose and which one of us is next.  Mine was in June and Billy’s is next - this Saturday.  He’s been getting random presents for the past week already, due to various family visits.  Since he is turning 4, he is still somewhat confused about how birthdays work.  Consequently, he’s a monster right now with regard to gifts.
Billy:  [addressing any grown-up in the vicinity] Do you have a present for me?
Me:  [reddens with shame]
"Do you have a present for me?"
There was plenty to do at Topsail too.  The kids climbed all over and around Lee’s boat, Karl got pretty good at throwing the minnow net, Billy explored James’ car (“It has a spoiler and 4 pirates.  I’m gonna have one of those.”), and the early fireworks/smoke bombs were a hit with all.  I was amazed at how Topsail has grown in the past few years.  But I can still hold my breath all the way across the bridge.

Lighting smoke bombs under the Corn Hole game is good fun
Billy watched the smoke bombs from the porch
 We saw:
  •          Mary John & Herschel (Bubber) Caldwell  (aunt & uncle)
  •          Lee Caldwell (cousin)
  •          James Caldwell (cousin)
  •          Debbie & Randy (Mary John’s sister)
  •          Jamie McGlaughon (spelled it right!)

On the way home from Wilmington, the wind was just right for us to see the Holly Shelter fire firsthand.  From Topsail, the setting sun was red, red, red.  It looked eerily familiar.

Despite all the fires, today was a good day.

July 2, 2011

Today was spent at Bottle Beach – a small sandbar between the point at Emerald Isle and Hammocks Beach.  It was really smoky this morning.  I heard that the Holly Shelter fire is 100K acres and has been burning for a month or so.  When the wind is to the SW, the smoke rolls in down here.  PU.  By 10:30, the wind changed directions, blowing the smoke back inland.
You can barely see the Coast Guard Station behind the boat, to the right
Thanks to Jamie McLaughon for trekking us across the ICW!  He grilled hot dogs (Billy ate 2 and Katie ate 3!) – yum!  We joined the rest of the small boats in the greater Camp Lejeune area for some floating fun and a (very) little fishing.  It was a great day.

We caught many critters today.  And we let them all go.
Except for the already-dead ones.
Ouch!  David 'catches' a crab.

Billy:  There are pirates next door!
Gerry grilled salmon on the new grill, I roasted veggies, and Gayle baked bread for dinner.  The grown-ups ate well while the kids complained about the various components (except the bread, of course).  They are playing so well together and everyone wishes we lived closer to one another.
Me:  Bradley, does your mom let you jump on the sofa like that?
Bradley:  I don’t know.  I didn’t ask her.

July 1, 2011

As we head into the holiday weekend, I would like to note that Billy has slept through the night maybe twice since we left New Mexico.  Last night he was up at 1:30 and got up for good at 5:30.  It is making me crabby.  There will likely be fireworks, but not the pretty kind.

Billy's sassy, tired face
Billy, in time out.  Thank you, God!

We spent the morning and early afternoon at the beach.  Lindsay is building quite a shell collection.  And everyone was buried today.  We still can’t keep Billy out of the water.

See what I mean about the helicopters??
Today was Karl’s last day at camp.  They closed the week with a small ceremony and performance where Karl was a pirate.  He had a great week and I recommend the camp highly.
During the performance…
Me:  [videotaping]
Annoying Grandmother Next To Me (AGNTM):  [ring, ring, ring, ring] Hello?
AGNTM: Oh, hi! I meant to call you earlier. Yes! We are planning to grill mahi tonight. Can you and Steve join us?
Me:  [videotaping]
AGNTM:  Oh, I see. Well, can you come by next Tuesday?  Blah, blah, blah..
Me:  [points to the stage]  Excuse me, but we are trying to listen to that.
AGNTM:  [shamed by the whippersnapper in very-cool flip flops] Oh.  Sorry.
